We are thrilled to learn that 2014 artist-in-residence Christine Conley’s brilliant short animation The Search is an official selection at the 2015 Indie Memphis Film Festival. We are proud that this creation was conceived at La Porte Peinte! Christine came to La Porte Peinte to focus on learning Flash animation and to complete a short animation. She completed the first segment (the first chronologically, although it became the second segment in the completed short) during her residency — we have loved showing this segment as part of our current ongoing exhibition, Quotidiæn.  Over the next year Christine worked on two other sections and finally put them together for the completed work, which runs 4 minutes 23 seconds.

Christine says, I have entered The Search in only one film festival to date, but with the encouragement of getting accepted, I plan to start entering more. I also have shown it in one art exhibition in addition to your gallery, and hope to enter more of those with it. Thanks for the chance to get started on this project. I had wanted to learn animation for some time, and making this short was transformative for me. After my near-fatal car accident in 2006, I had great difficulty getting back to making art. I finally came upon the idea of animating some drawings I had done before the accident, and this became a revitalizing metaphor for me, reanimating my excitement about making art.

Along with producing the animation, during her residency Christine regaled us with both her inspired original music and her inimitable, artfully inventive fashion sense.
