At La Porte Peinte we provide sanctuary, community, and resources to artists, writers, musicians, and dancers from around the world. Thanks to the generosity of our LPP USA donors, in 2019 we were pleased to be able to fully subsidize five month-long residencies for visual artists and writers, two of them invitational, and to extend partial subsidies to one writer and one musician. In 2020 we hope to continue to increase our ability to offer opportunities to those who might not otherwise be able to benefit from them. Please make a year-end contribution to help this happen. We are also delighted to receive recommendations for invitational residencies. Thank you very much for your generosity and support, and we wish you a wonderful holiday season and new year!

In 2019 we hosted 26 residencies: thirteen visual artists, one poet, five writers, two playwrights, two musicians, one emerging filmmaker, and two installation artists from countries as diverse as Argentina, Canada, China, Holland, Romania, Russia, Spain, the United States and Japan. We hosted a painting workshop led by Atlanta painter
Trish Land, welcoming a vibrant group of artists who found inspiration in the Burgundy landscape under Trish’s guidance.
Deb Kay Rosenbury and Jan Mendel assisted Trish in making the workshop a rousing success.
We were delighted to host several returnee AIRs, some of whom join us year after year. Among these were metalpoint artist
Jeannine Cook, who in 2019 had a major solo show,
Terratorium, at the Musée-Galerie Carnot in Villeneuve. We published her
book and carry it in the gallery, where her stunning silverpoint work may also be seen. Writers
Mimi Lok and Cathy Rose returned for second residencies; Mimi’s book
Last of Her Name was published in late 2019 to great reviews and has already gone into a second printing. Returnee Dutch poet/artist
Gerry van der Linden did a month-long residency which culminated in a show of her installation work and a reading from her book
Fauves des Villes, published in France in 2019. Canadian author
Kristyn Dunnion worked on new stories, and
Ted Nusbaum and
Laura Adam worked on scripts.
Vivien Sin, of San Francisco and Hong Kong, created powerful, politically prescient installation work incorporating video. Painter
Fiona Morehouse and installation artist
Maria Mohonea moved forward with ongoing projects as part of an exciting rural-to-urban research/practice residency partnership between LPP and Paris’
L’Air Arts. Painter
Parisa Harati worked on a new series of abstract pieces;
Jayne Gaskins created new work integrating photography and textile art. We hosted a wonderful family residency with painter/writers
Mark Butler and
Carol Elkovich and their filmmaker son Finnegan West Butler.
Chubei Yagyu came for two months from Japan and created a beguiling east-west
yokai encounter in the gallery, also connecting with kindred local artist
Danielle-Marie Chanut, of Paris and Noyers. The prolific and adventurous artist
Elena Likhatskaya, of Russia and NYC, created countless vividly colourful naïve scenes of Noyers and environs.
Lori Field brought her otherworldly Bunny Planet to life in the gallery with silverpoint drawings of armoured women and other mystical creatures. Enchanting immersive installations in paper by
Momoca Usagi and
Alexis Mérat continue to inhabit the gallery, as does the magical LPP
egungun created by
Dana Kawano.
Fabulous music was made separately and together by
Michelle Malone and
RH Land; Buenos Aires musician
Aldo Pinelli, working on medieval-progressive music for his next album, serenaded delighted visitors to the gallery and performed an intimate
concert.
The effervescent Christelle Seguenot joined the team at La Porte Peinte after the departure of Spanish painter Francisco Corella Borrás, who achieved a breakthrough series of immense paintings during his months at LPP. Australian photographer Emma Hellowell and local artist/maker Elisabeth Duarte have continued to play important roles at LPP.
